Colossal Cave is truly ancient, much older than most caves, and it was formed in a very different way from most caves; also it is currently dormant, which means it is a comfortable, dry 70° year-round. The Park is on the National Register of Historic Places because of the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and occupation by the prehistoric Hohokam Indians. It is also uniquely located both geologically and geographically, which results in an abundance of animal and plant life, much of it different from other areas of the Sonoran Desert.
